St. Vincent DePaul Church was built as a parish church but in 1883–1884 it was enlarged and renamed as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Scranton, which served almost a quarter of a million Catholics at the turn of the twentieth century. It was remodeled by Philadelphia's Durang, who hid Amsden's simple Romanesque Revival barn behind a suitably commanding Baroque facade with a pedimented projecting entrance bay thrust forward between twin bell towers. Durang's hand is also evident in the voluminous interior. The adjacent rectory (1908) is by Lewis Hancock. It was restored in 1992 by Leung Hemmler Camayd.
