Mayor Stephen Reed has built new institutions using the power of the newly active state government. This is a midstate version of Philadelphia's Franklin Institute's mix of science and entertainment, but it smacks more of the shopping center in its broad surfaces and bold lighting than the Beaux-Arts of the early twentieth century.
