Elizabeth Cochran (1864–1922), writing under the pen name Nellie Bly, was an internationally known journalist who wrote major articles for the Pittsburgh Dispatch and the New York World newspapers, supporting labor and exposing the social problems of her era. She lived in this sprawling, three-story frame Colonial Revival house until her father died, leaving the family of fifteen children nearly destitute. A pair of pseudo-Palladian windows on the first story of this private home are sheltered beneath a porch supported on slender Ionic columns. The upper windows have sawtooth ornament and scrollwork.
