The Mission Revival Mount Rose Elementary School has served the surrounding community for nearly a century. Tall steps lead to the main facade, a U-shape enclosing a courtyard, formed by two projecting wings terminating in scrolled parapets decorated with mosaic insets. Two square towers capped by octagonal domes are the defining features of the school, visible from a few blocks away. Of four schools built about 1910, this building and the nearly identical McKinley Park School on Riverside Drive are the only two that remain, and Mount Rose is the only one that still functions as a school. Its survival is a rare example of preservation success in Nevada. Reno citizens, many of whom are alumni, supported the continued use of the building as a school and persuaded the school district to preserve the structure, which is in excellent condition.
