Significant as a fine example of Italianate domestic architecture, the Miles Pratt House is also noteworthy because of its protection by the Stewardship Program of Historic New England, Inc. (formerly the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities). Pratt was an industrialist, whose wealth came from his stove manufactory and from contracts for cannonballs and other metals for the Watertown Arsenal (WA1) during the Civil War. The fanciful scalloped canopies with turned drops at the entrance and north porch make this building highly distinctive. The carriage house at the rear of the property seems to date from the same period as the house.
