A small gem by the architect for Widener Library (HY11), the former Institute of Geographical Exploration is a handsome two-story structure in red brick with marble trim. One can note especially the carved marble map over the door. The works of Robert Adam and Charles Bulfinch inform this long, low, restrained design. In 1957, the Shepley firm remodeled the building for Harvard-Yenching Institute, adding a library addition to the rear that is sympathetic in scale and materials. Founded in 1928 by aluminum pioneer Charles M. Hall, Harvard-Yenching Institute is an independent foundation that supports the advancement of the humanities and social sciences in East and Southeast Asia.
