Divinity Hall, designed by Solomon Willard and immediately reworked by Thomas W. Sumner, was constructed during the term of President John Kirkland, who oversaw the establishment of both the Divinity School and the Law School. The first significant building to be located beyond Harvard Yard, Divinity Hall represents a transitional design, with the tautness of red brick Federal architecture and with a central pediment and Doric entrance porticos of the Greek Revival.
