The name is appropriate for this experiment in speculative housing. Here Davis Brothers, as builders and real estate developers, teamed up with Rowlett, a local architect. These picturesque Tudor Revival town houses of brick, stone, and stucco with half timbering evoke English garden suburbs. The roofline is appropriately varied, and the clustered chimneys add charm. The U-shaped site plan, with houses around a public green, was common for such developments in these years. Many of these, however, were designed for workers and owned collectively. In Richmond a different mentality ruled: the development was aimed at uppermiddle-class families, and owners individually held title to their units. Included in the original bylaws was a restriction on exterior changes, a factor crucial to maintaining the picturesque character of the village.
