In this reddish-brown sandstone church, the architects seemed to be looking back some fifteen years to the then-fashionable Richardsonian Romanesque. However, in contrast to Richardson, their interest appears to have been in the arena of richness and elaboration. Projecting from an octagonal sanctuary is the main entrance tower, a smaller octagonal tower to the left, and in front of this a broad portecochère. The surfaces are treated in alternating bands of smooth and rusticated masonry. The windows, doors, and balconies abound with coupled columns, cornices, and a wide array of ornamentation in low and high relief. The Presbyterian church is one of the most impressive Richardsonian Romanesque buildings still standing in Iowa.
