1880–1881, R. F. Carter. 1100 block of Main St., between 10th and 11th streets

Like the 1918 Dillon Memorial Fountain (
ME108), the Soldier's Monument interrupts Main Street and forces the roadway to go around either side. The monument is also the center of the adjacent open spaces, with the high school on one side and the cathedral on the other. The monument itself has a dual base and an obelisklike shaft; on top of the capital is the statue of a Civil War soldier.
