1843, 1927. 119 Park Rd.

The limestone blocks used for the walls of this one-and-a-half-story mid-nineteenth-century stone cottage were supposedly rejects from the state capitol building then under construction. The house was built by Robert Hutchinson, a carpenter and its probable designer. A balanced arrangement of paired windows focuses on a central door with its transom light. The house was “Colonialized” by the addition of three gabled wall dormers on its street facade during an extensive remodeling carried out in 1927 by the architect Mark Anthony for Professor E. P. Kuhl of the University of Iowa. Besides adding the dormers, Anthony raised the roof, added a second floor, and made many changes to the interior. At a distance, the house has all the appearance of a typical Colonial Revival dwelling of the late 1920s or early 1930s.
