Sitting on a large lot set back from the road, this Works Progress Administration (WPA) project's red tile roof and cream-colored masonry walls present a handsome statement on higher education on Maui. The projecting auditorium is a bold Moderne statement with its four fins wrapping over the top of the building. Classroom wings extend to the rear and form open-ended courtyards. Wide, single-loaded lanai serve as corridors to the classrooms on both the first and second floors. A distinctive mix of Spanish Mission and Moderne elements combine with a plan sensitive to Hawaii's climate, reflecting Stewart's aim to design regionally appropriate public buildings.
