Built by plantation carpenters a year after the relocation of the Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar (HC&S) mill from Spreckelsville to Puunene, this single-story building's large hipped roof sweeps around a dormer ventilator and flows out to form a simple portico supported by posts. Such architectural details as pilaster-framed segmental-arched windows and carved rafter tails place this modest house above the plantation norm. To mark the centennial of HC&S, this mill manager's house was rehabilitated in 1982 under the direction of architect Jim Niess to house a museum de voted to the history of sugar on Maui. Much of the interior space and detail have been preserved in the conversion. For several years the Puunene mill was the largest producing sugar mill in the world.
