The application of late Art Deco forms to this tongue-and-groove, single-wall store marks the end of an era. Soon the automobile, the supermarket, and new construction methods made the small neighborhood store a thing of the past. Richard Ushijima is the third generation of his family to manage this establishment. The original store was started by Richard's grandparents in 1915, and was located by St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Kawanui (1864; 79-7234 St. Paul's Road). Almost forty years later, his parents, Hiroshi and Tsuma Ushijima, relocated the business to this property. While Tsuma operated the store, Hiroshi worked as a mechanic in the garage next door. The battered, dry stack stone wall which serves as the garage's foundation was constructed by several stone workers including Jacob Hua.
