One of the world's largest sellers of cosmetics, fragrances, and toiletries, Avon had a facility in Newark starting in 1954. This building's original curtain wall, dramatically low and long at 500 feet, employed vibrant color: yellow-enameled metal panels and green glazed brick. The panels floated in front of the wall, as did the aluminum mullions and honeycomb-pattern bronzed grills as sunscreens. Rothberg's exterior modernization, undertaken for aesthetic purposes, involved replacement of the entire curtain wall with a more massive structure. Gone was the minimalist lightness of the original conception; gone, too, was color, eradicated in favor of aluminum panels in a smoky gray. The results are attractive—but at the cost of a modernist classic of the 1960s.
