1880. 1978, renovation, Glave, Newman, Anderson. 104 Shockoe Slip

The Bowers Building, originally a warehouse, was the first building in this area renovated for use as offices and upscale apartments. The adaptive reuse initiated a trend among young professionals who bought or rented apartments over storefronts in the Slip. The spectacular Italianate tobacco exchange building that once formed the south wall of the plaza was unfortunately demolished long ago, and the plaza has remained incomplete for decades.
