Had this building, now the oldest in its neighborhood, been lost to urban renewal, any architectural sense of what antebellum downtown Parkersburg was like would have disappeared. Built of brick on a stone foundation, the Neale House combines Federal and Greek Revival characteristics. Elliptical fanlights in gable ends and incised rosettes in the stone lintels are lingering Federal features, while the broad, horizontal entrance, heavy cornice, and pedimented gable ends are Grecian in spirit. George Neale, Jr., a leading merchant of early Parkersburg, constructed the house as his residence, but it was converted to offices after his death in 1880. The building was restored in 1974 to serve as law offices.
