In 1834 James Frazier, then proprietor of the adjacent Star Tavern, built this plain, two-story building with a rolled brick cornice and leased it as a library and study for the Western Division of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia. During the Civil War it served as a hospital, and the names and regiments that military patients penciled on the walls are still visible and carefully preserved. After the war it was converted to a Masonic hall. The town of Lewisburg subsequently purchased the building, and in 1941, after extensive restoration, it was dedicated as the Greenbrier County Library and Museum. The town's Confederate Monument was relocated from the Confederate cemetery to the library grounds in 1945, and in 1977 a small, twostory brick slave house was moved from another Lewisburg property to the yard, to serve as a library annex and reading room.
