Now the oldest building in the square, this is also one of the earliest surviving clerk's offices in the state. The one-story, gabled brick building, made T-shaped in 1833 with a rear addition, has segmental-arched openings and a later Italianate porch along the front. Beyond it is the town pump, a rare survivor of the wells found almost always on early Virginia courthouse squares.
