The lot for this, the town's earliest African American church, was purchased in 1869 for twenty-five dollars, and the materials were donated by the church's first minister and namesake, Robert Orrick, a former slave who was an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Orrick, with the unusual consent of his antebellum owner, Major Kean (Cain) of Winchester, ran a profitable livery stable of his own and thereby acquired considerable personal wealth. His rectangular, one-story, gable-end frame church is three bays deep with pointed-arched windows and a simple pyramidal-roofed belfry. The front vestibule is a later addition.
