The first Lutheran church built by German settlers in the 1770s was located in a corner of the Old Town Cemetery on Mulberry Street. Although that church is no longer standing, its cemetery contains the graves of the earliest settlers, including the Stephens family. Another cemetery, located across from today's Lutheran church, also contains some early German inscriptions. The rectangular Gothic Revival brick church features a prominent front gable with pointed-arched stained glass windows, and a brick corner entrance tower topped by a steeple with an open belfry.
