Taverns were almost as important features in rural county seats as courthouses. Only a short stone's throw from the courthouse, William Watkins built this imposing, two-story double-pile, brick building. The Federal building has a symmetrical five-bay facade, with nine-over-nine sash windows in the first story and six-over-nine above. A pair of massive chimneys connected by parapet walls is at each end.
