Newspapers of various names have been edited (and for a time printed) on this site since the early 1920s. On the 4th Street facade can be seen remnants of the original Renaissance Revival structure. By the early 1950s the International Style had arrived in Richmond, and Carneal and Johnston added to and encased most of the original building with long, horizontal strips of industrial-sash metal windows and a thin veneer. They also created a plaza in front, the first example in Richmond of this post–World War II urban phenomenon.
