In addition to the Bremond Block (
AU29), the houses of the Hirschfeld complex are the city's finest Victorian architecture. The Henry Hirschfeld House and Carriage House of 1885 by John Andrewartha (1980 restoration, Bell, Klein and Hoffman and Chartier Newton and Associates) is a remarkable Italianate-inspired house. Architect and civil engineer Andrewartha immigrated in 1865 to Kentucky from England and moved to Austin in 1881 in hopes of securing the new capitol commission. The Hirschfeld buildings are now owned by Texas A&M University. The adjacent Hirschfeld Cottage (1873, Loomis, Christian and Dohne, builders; 1980 restoration, Bell, Klein and Hoffman and Chartier Newton and Associates) is smaller.
