The first of two houses which Greene built for himself, this Federal house is exceptional as a mini-palace amid simple, much smaller gabled examples. The mass of the house is not as Greene built it; in the late nineteenth century the original five-bay front was extended by one and the third story was added in order to fit a door and stair to a later attic apartment. The house is unusual for its all-over carpentered rustication and for its delicately detailed entrance with an elliptical fanlight and exceptional paneling on either side where narrow windows are customary. (The same entrance reappears next door at number 29.)
