For Newport, this is a unique remaining example of a Victorian Gothic house with polychrome trim in darker brick and lighter stone and a rare example of the extensive settings which once graced many more houses in the area. The stonework of the pointed-arched windows, the large octagonal tower pulled into one corner, and the carved molding give the overall boxiness an almost ecclesiastical or perhaps scholastic aura.
