This large villa, one of the earlier summer houses in this neighborhood, was designed for New Yorker H. Allen Wright in the Italianate style and constructed of roughly dressed stone. The composition of massive square tower, arches, and bracketed details relates the early section of Belair to Seth Bradford's other wellknown Newport mansion, the original Château-sur-Mer, built a year later. In the 1870s, a new owner enlarged the house and added several auxiliary structures, including a gatehouse and stable designed by Dudley Newton. Although their details are mostly in keeping with the sense of the main house, some, like the trefoil gable over the stable doors, are idiosyncratically oversized for the scale of the smaller buildings. Belair was substantially altered in the twentieth century and is now divided into condominium units.
