The Lutheran college, founded in 1867, was originally housed in James Allen's Trout Hall (
LH6) until an endowment by Asa Packer, founder of Bethlehem's Lehigh University (
NO41), enabled the college to build a new campus on its present site in 1905. Within a decade the area around campus began to fill with single-family and double houses, and soon became the town's most desirable residential district.
