1848–1850, John Haviland. 625 E. King St.

The contrast between the surrounding row houses and the battlemented orange-hued Cocalico stone towers of John Haviland's jail is almost as stark as the Fulton Steamboat Inn's riverboat (LA3) across from Dutch Wonderland (LA4). Haviland became the jailer to the world, with his plans imitated as far away as Rome. Like Philadelphia's Eastern State Penitentiary (PH126), this originally stood far removed from other buildings. Still, there is something of a movie set about it that needs only knights on horseback to complete the scene.
