Among the oddities of Pennsylvania is the desire of separate townships and government agencies to compete against rather than to complement their neighbors. One result is the one-mile gap between townships coupled with two of the nation's principal truck routes that have generated one of America's principal centers of distribution. Roughly 60 percent of the national population lies within a day's drive of the spot, making this, as it was in the eighteenth century, a principal point for connecting to the wider nation. It is now a zone of giant truck stops and vast distribution warehouses that is highly visible from both the turnpike and the interstate.
