1854, Myers and Gutshall. 37 E. High St.

The massive brownstone Norman gatehouse with its crenellated towers owes much to Napolean LeBrun's Montgomery County Courthouse (MO23) in Norristown, leading back to Haviland's Eastern State Penitentiary (PH126). Cumberland County's smaller size required more modest facilities, but the monumentality of the present building is still remarkable, particularly as it stands amidst handsome town houses. The brilliant blue framework rising out of the old prison yard contains offices that were inserted in 1985.
