1900, John A. Dempwolf. 100 E. High St.

That Carlisle's Germans were firmly in the circle of York is evident in this commission to Dempwolf. Unlike the dark hues of his nineteenth-century work, here he adopted the orange brick and yellow sandstone that became fashionable around the turn of the century. But the building retains the customary German overlay of rich ornament that suggests Viennese confections both architectural and culinary.
