Town Diner is an early and important example of the built-on-site diner in Massachusetts. Previously, diners were built in factories and hauled to their destinations. Town Diner fuses the traditional Massachusetts diner form—the barrel-roofed diner with closed barrel (rounded hipped) roof—and contemporary diner forms of the 1940s, with their sleek profiles and exterior finishes. In 1947, the Contos family commissioned construction of the two principal elevations as an L-shaped addition wrapping around an earlier Worcester Lunch Car Company diner already on the site. The result is one of the best illustrations in Massachusetts of modernizing an old diner.
