The address is on Brattle Street, but the entrance, set back from the corner site, is on Lakeview Avenue. High gray walls of slatted wood and red brick together with grand oak trees screen the small house and large garden from the streets, providing maximum privacy, extending to the swimming pool, the latter an uncommon local amenity. Although compatible in its general configuration and details, the house contributes little to the streetscape, except the massive gable roof with single dormer and brick chimney. Behind the wall, one finds the attributes of New England regionalism interpreted in a modern mode, visible in the fixed and sliding-glass window walls, skylights, loft bedrooms, articulation of windows, and the layout taking advantage of the course of the sun. A cross-section reveals a sophisticated proportional system, based on a circle inscribed within a square.
