One of the oldest cemeteries in the city, Copp's Hill contains an extraordinary collection of colonial headstones, including the gravestones of the Mathers and others who dominated Boston before the Revolution. In the 1830s, the cemetery was reorganized, with many of the stones repositioned in neat rows along brick paths, and the burial ground became a popular site for promenades. The cemetery provides panoramic views of the harbor, Chelsea, and Charlestown, especially the Bunker Hill Monument (see CH6) and “Old Ironsides” (CH16). From here the British bombarded Charlestown in the battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775.
