c. 1950. 2223 S. Main St.

From 1947 through 1951, the Lustron Corporation of Cicero, Ill., and Columbus, Ohio, manufactured and marketed their all-steel houses throughout the Midwest. It is surprising to note how many of these porcelain-enameled single-floor houses were bought and built throughout Iowa during these years. Though somewhat more expensive than built-on-the-site, wood-frame houses, they had the advantage of being constructed with great machine precision. With only a few exceptions, the Lustrons built in Iowa have held up well, and as is the case with this example, they look as if they have just come from the showroom floor.
