Established in 1925 in a former elementary school at the corner of 5th Street and Rood Avenue, Mesa State College has become a four-year college that enrolls some 4,000 students and occupies more than six blocks. The unpretentious campus is dominated by handsome modern beige brick buildings compatible with the original two-story, flat-roofed, golden brick Houston Hall (
ME09.1; WPA, 1940). A building boom during the 1960s added many of the present twenty structures, including Tomlinson Library (1967), Walter Walker Fine Arts Center (1969), and the earth-sheltered W. W. Campbell College Center (1962). Several buildings are the work of Paul Atchison (see ME10).
