1875, W. H. J. Nichols. 500 6th St. (northwest corner of Taos St.)

William Cushman's imposing three-story brick Italianate commercial structure culminated with a third-floor opera house. Although the third floor was declared structurally unsound shortly after it was built, it did not collapse until 1969, finally relenting under heavy snow loads. The rubble was cleared away and the roof lowered, leaving this building with especially broad eaves and an oversized cornice. Since the 1950s it has housed the Silver Queen restaurant, saloon, and beer cellar, as well as the Clear Creek National Bank.
