David W. Brown, a founder of the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company, spent some of his coal fortune on this three-and-one-half-story stuccoed brick house. The rambling Queen Anne dwelling showcases vernacular framework in its octagonal tower, multiple low-pitched rooflines with extended overhangs, and first- and second-story porches. An entrance under a porte-cochère leads to an interior resplendent with oak, walnut, and cherry wood-work in eighteen rooms reached by a spiral staircase. Arched interior doorways, pocket doors, chandeliers, six fireplaces, and a third-story “ballroom” enhance this landmark, now surrounded by post–World War II developments.
