The tavern was offered for rent in 1779 as the “much frequented house, formerly kept by Ann Fox and now by Mr. William Buckner.” Originally five bays long, it has a peculiar arrangement of interior front and exterior rear chimneys, indicating the manipulation of room size in its Georgian plan to keep the rooms of a consistent size. English brown sandstone was used for mantels and exterior steps.
