1904. 212 S. Chestnut (southwest corner of E. 2nd St.)

In this Shingle Style dwelling, the third-story shingled gable and dormer ends are cantilevered over the sandstone walls below. Flared bargeboard on the gables and dormers echoes the entry pediment trim, as does the use of paired brackets. Walls of irregular coursed ashlar sandstone are matched by the massive stone columns of the wrap-around porch. The third-floor ballroom, actually a multipurpose room, a two-lane basement bowling alley, and a swimming pool were among the amenities enjoyed by the Van Vleets in livelier times.
