Originally called the Grand Union Hotel, this three-story brick landmark trimmed in white stone was renamed in honor of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Heavily hooded and elongated windows in sets of two and three, polished stone quoins, an ornately bracketed cornice above a decorative frieze, and the flat roof with overhanging eaves are typical of the Italianate style. A terrazzo-floored lobby leads to a Rococo ballroom, a ladies' “retiring room,” and a gaming room, saloon, and smoking parlor. Sadly, this 100-room grand hotel has been vacant since the 1970s.
