Croatian coal miners relied on this former lodge not only for food, drink, and lodging, but also for sick benefits, burials, and prayers of the Croatian St. Barbara Society, named for the patron saint of miners. Such consolations were needed in the accident-prone coal industry; frequent tragedies included an explosion in Crested Butte's Jokerville Mine that killed sixty men. In 1902 this building was rolled on logs from Elk Avenue to its present site. The restored corrugated sheet metal false front incorporates the original storefront and recessed entry to what remains a first-floor saloon. The upstairs has been converted to seven elegantly furnished guest rooms with such amenities as a racquetball court, an aerobics room, steam baths, and a giant hot tub.
