1881. 1100 Grand Ave. (southeast corner of Pitkin St.)

The core of this two-story slab and log building is the original 1881 store of James Carins, who stuck it out following the 1880s mining bust and removal of the county seat to Hot Sulphur Springs. Horizontal and vertical lodgepole slab siding recesses into a second-story porch on the west side, and a covered porch shelters the sidewalk. This pioneer commercial building houses a store and a soda fountain.
