Inmates constructed this two-story, hiproofed, Queen Anne Style house of brick with stone trim. It is overshadowed by its three-story round corner tower decorated with an inset stone lion's head and topped by a domed roof. An open, circular porch around the tower base and a trio of stained glass windows lend a residential ambiance to a home hemmed in by the prison's 20-foot high, 4-foot-thick stone wall topped by barbed wire. Besides two cat-sized stone lions on the front walkway, the Warden's House is also guarded by the State Armory (1921, Major A. R. Young, construction superintendent), across the street. This unusually well-preserved, still functioning armory, following a design used statewide, is a two-story brick barrel-vaulted structure fronted by formidable square corner towers and a peaked parapet.
