This Second Empire mansard-roofed dwelling belonged to James Clelland, an early Cañon City merchant also responsible for the Clelland Block at 404 Main Street. James Peabody, a Cañon City mayor who later served as Colorado governor (1902–1904), also lived in the house, which has two grand parlors and splendid fireplaces. In the early 1990s the city restored it for Chamber of Commerce offices and a visitors' center, as part of the $2.4 million River Station Project, which also rehabilitated the nearby bungaloid Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe depot (c. 1915), catercorner across 4th Street.
