Nicknamed the “Mighty Fortress,” this massive red brick building houses one of the largest congregations in Savannah. A 1993 electrical fire destroyed its original nineteenth-century sanctuary, but the congregation chose to rebuild, greatly boosting the neighborhood’s resurgence. The church also contributed to restoration efforts of houses along the street, and there is perhaps no more dramatic combination of neighborhood housing benefiting from a supporting institution in the city.
