One of the most exuberant residences in Savannah, this house was built for McNeil, president of the Savannah Lighting Company. Architect Norrman employed the muscular forms of Beaux-Arts classicism more typical of public buildings, with a colossal Corinthian colonnade whose circular form contrasts with the cubic mass to the north. Here generous arches, baroque terra-cotta details, and iron balconies enliven the design. The row of houses (1883–1897) facing Forsyth Park in the two blocks to the south at 601–711 Whitaker Street is a veritable textbook of prevailing residential styles during the late nineteenth century—Italianate, Queen Anne, and Second Empire.
