1930–1931, Arthur B. Heaton; later additions. 10440 Main St. (northeast corner of Main St. and Chain Bridge Rd.)

This brick building, on a prominent corner across from the courthouse and on the site of an earlier ordinary, was designed by a wellknown Washington, D.C., architect. Flemish bond brickwork and overscaled round-arched, multipaned windows set off the elaborately detailed entrance. The main banking room recalls a period when banking was a genteel activity: it is wonderfully detailed, with a balcony such as those seen on the exteriors of colonial buildings surmounting the safe.
