Two surviving depots in Gretna’s center affirm the importance of the railroad to the town’s growth. This brick one-story former passenger and freight railroad depot has a gabled parapet and deep overhangs along three sides carried on battered brick piers and iron brackets. One block away at 4th Street and Huey P. Long Avenue is the former Southern Pacific Railroad Depot (1906), a small wooden structure with a pitched roof and gable in the center of its long side, which was used primarily as a relay station for railroad employees. A caboose is on display beside the building.
